This piece measures 8 inches tall. It depicts a white Akita dog wearing a Yokozuna champion regalia called a “Mawashi”. The artist is Ishida Rainosuke, of Kyoto, Japan. According to the insert that comes with the piece, he wanted to convey the regal image of a champion Akita dog by having it wear the Unryu style Sumo Champion Yokozuna Mawashi apron.
Kyo ware (also called Kyo-Yaki) is a type of Japanese pottery originating from Kyoto, Japan. One of the more known styles of Kyo-Yaki is with the distinctive design and flamboyant coloring. Though the artist presented the piece with a more serene appearance by using a soft cream colored white glaze, the gold color accent would hint the intentionally controlled subdued elegance of Kyo-Yaki at its best. The condition is very good.
