Stranded in the Delta Quadrant, the Nova-class USS Equinox was in many ways a dark reflection of Voyager. While Janeway and her crew upheld Starfleet ideals and principles, the Equinox's traumatized crew - and its captain, Rudolph Ransom - resorted to more reckless methods to get home - at any cost.
The design of the USS Equinox was based on an early concept for the Defiant that was never realized for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. First mentioned in the Star Trek The Next Generation Technical Manual, the Nova class was a new Starfleet ship under development at the time.
