The Central of Georgia Railway Company (CofGa) was a regional carrier that served the states of Georgia, Alabama, and Tennessee. For auction is a rounf brass baggage check from the CofGa, circa 1930s. It measures approximately 3x2 inches. The CofGa transported passengers from its railroad lines to ships operated by Ocean Steamship Company (the "Savannah Line") for their continuing journeys to New York City and Boston, the steamships' terminals. Baggage being checked from CofGa trains to the steamships was transported by either truck or buggy to the ship terminal, and this baggage check was used to identify such items. Packages and smaller freight items were also tagged.

Description
The Central of Georgia Railway Company
(CofGa) was a
regional carrier that served the states of Georgia, Alabama, and Tennessee
. Most of its trackage was in Georgia, where it served the major cities of Atlanta, Savannah, Augusta, Macon and Columbus. Lines from Georgia extended to Birmingham, Montgomery and other smaller cities and towns in Alabama, but its sole penetration into Tennessee was a route to Chattanooga.
The CofGa, like most smaller railroads, went through a never-ending series of financial troubles, bankruptcies and reorganizations. It also acquired a number of smaller lines over the years.
Southern Railway obtained control of the CofGa in the 1960s
, and its lines were gradually incorporated into the Southern system or abandoned. Remaining CofGa
trackage today is operated by Norfolk Southern
.
For auction is a round brass baggage check from the CofGa, circa 1930s.
